    Questions and Answers

can i add three monitors to one pc graphics card ?

    Q) hi got a ati x700pro graphics card-got 2 ports on back.got 2 monitors connected,1 to each port.i run multi monitors in 'stretch mode' such that 2 monitor workscreens(of 1024x768) becomes one large one that spans both monitors-2048x768 prob-i want 3 monitors linked to my pc, using just one graphics card and still run span mode such that the workspace is now 3072x768..the question is this.......... can i do this with a vga splitter into one of the ports(which will then support 2 monitors) , and then have the third monitor on the other graphics card port thanks

    A) A Vga splitter just duplicates the content of the first monitor on to the second. It does not allow them to show different things. You would need a card with three outputs (they do make them) or a second video card for the third monitor.

twin monitors - one perfect one fuzzy?

    Q) why does this happen? is my pc not setup properly? i have two lcd monitors hooked up to my graphics card, the main monitor displays fine, but the other monitor is clear in parts and blurred in parts. no amount of toggling the monitor settings seems to clear up the problem. what is the problem? extra info: both monitors are brand new. the pc is brand new. when you swap them round (physically) they swap the behaviours. ie the primary monitor is clear, and the secondary monitor is blurred. thank you for the answers so far [h] the monitors the same model - identical in every way except serial number.

    A) It's difficult to say without knowing more info. It could be the card or the VGA cables or something could be causing interference. Have you swapped the monitors over so that the one playing up is the primary monitor? (presuming it isn't already).

    How to connect multiple monitors?

    Q) I currently have 2 pc's running various things on 2 monitors. I want to scrap on of the PC's and have THREE monitors running off 1 PC. Which is the best way to do this? One of the monitors is only a 11" and I'm not fussed about resolution on this (800x600 is fine) The other is my main PC one, and I want to run at 1024x768. The last will be the HDTV, which I believe also runs at 1024x768. Sound is not an issue, as I have seperate sound cards running the seperate appliances, but I want to know which leads are best to use. My graphics card is a old FX5200, with VGA, DVI and S-VID. i'm aware of the B&W problems with S-VID, so I didnt want to use that. Do I use DVI for the HDTV, VGA for main PC monitor, and buy a sperate graphics card for the 11"?? Any thoughts?

    A) wel! wel! wel! the HDTV runs at a native resolution of 1368 x 768. which is a bit more than the XGA resolution. if you HDTV is designated as FULLHD, then it runs at 1920 x 1080. which is quite a high resolution and i do not recommend running this resolution in a FX5200. if possible get a card based on the nVidia 8800GTS OC 320MB chipset, which is a DX10 chipset, but is available for around $300. or buy any other decent dx9/dx10 GPU. the choice is yours. while getting a new card, make sure it has 1 HDMI out and 1 DVI out. as then, it wil give a better resol. on the HDTV. you can then connect the HDTV using HDMI and use a DVI-VGA adapter. then get a VGA splitter and attach it to the adapter. Thus u'l be able to connect all three

my monitors have thin black streaks coming in from the right.?

    Q) I have a whole bunch of NEC multisynch 1510+ monitors. some have started to develop thin black lines coming from the right hand side of the monitor coming accross part of most of the screen. is there something I can do about this at all - if so, what?

    A) Yeah, I have a 17" version of pretty much the same monitor, and when it started doing it, I'm afraid it was on its last legs.... Perhaps its time for a new one.

what is a monitor, what type of montiors is there.and can you plz explain each diffenret type of monitors.?

    Q) what is a monitor, what type of montiors is there.and can you plz explain each diffenret type of monitors. and the advantages and disadvantages of these differnet type of montiors

    A) A monitor generally describes the screen that you're looking at now! (if you're reading this on a computer!) :o) You can get CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) Monitors - They are the big old style ones that take up a lot of room on a desk. Generally though an expensive CRT monitor produces the best picture... You can also get LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) Monitors - They are the "flat" slimline ones that you see poping up everywhere now... You can also get TFT (Thin Film Transistor) Monitors - Basically the same as an LCD monitor but uses a slightly different technology to produce the picture... You can also use a Television as a "monitor" You can also get Plasma monitors - (it's the same technology as a Plasma TV) That's basically the different types... but you can also get sub categories of these such as progectors and things like that... (In fact a projector is simple a very small version of an LCD monitor but it uses light and lenses to allow the picture to be increased in size to cover a wall! The advantages of a CRT monitor are that they last a long time, they produce by far the best picture, and are much more responsive... they are also cheaper - although now some low end LCD models are getting cheaper! The disadvantages are that they are bulky, they get hot (so if you have a room of them then the room will get VERY hot - this happenes alot in school computer rooms or large open plan offices etc), they also use a lot more elecricity. Advantages of LCD/TFT - Slim/space saving, Use much less power, dont suffer from the "flicker" that you can get on a CRT (therefore easier on the eyes if useing for a long time) Disadvantages - The colour can sometimes look a bit washed out (especially on cheap models), Sometimes you can get "ghosting" which means that the screen isn't refreshing quickly enough (it will creat shadows on the screen that last a split second but can get annoying when playing games or watching dvds) However if you spend anything over £150 - £200 on an LCD/TFT monitor then all these problems don't exist! - I have a Samsung SyncMaster 940BF - It's totally awesome and I would NEVER go back to CRT... (and Im a graphic artist!)

    Are PC monitors "HD"?

    Q) I have heard that PC monitors are HD but how can this be when they have no way of being connected to a HD service such as "Sky HD", computers do not support BluRay or HD-DVD and cannot play games consoles such as PS3 and XBox 360. Also, if this were true surely the companys would advertise the fact that there monitors are HD. also Muff!n, yes I do understand a Lot about computers and have just completed a 3 year course on prgraming but I am always willing and wanting to learn more. I don't see the harm in asing questions on this site, it is called "Answers". Curiosity never harmed anyone. I could just be completely ignorant like you for saying that!

    A) Yes, any monitor built to SVGA or XGA standard is at least as good, if not better, than any HD picture you'll get on a TV. No signal losses or drop outs. Of course, it doesn't run HD films unless you connect an HD/PC source.

Monitors on Computer aren't working--problem with Bios settings?

    Q) My friend and I were trying to get my slave drive my primary drive, and after changing settings in BIOS, resarted and found that the monitors don't respond anymore. WHAT DO I DO?

    A) You need to reset your BIOS. There's an option inside your BIOS to reset itself, but I'm guessing that since your monitors aren't working, you cant get into your BIOS. The other way of resetting your BIOS is to cut power to it. This is a little tricky. On your motherboard there is a battery. It looks like a watch battery except it's much bigger, like the size of a quarter. Pull the battery out, wait like three minutes, put the battery back in. Your BIOS should now be reset. Just so you know, on most hard drives there are jumpers on the back of them that control if they're slaves or master drives. Sometimes the drives even have little diagrams explaining how the jumpers work (if not, download the manual off of their web sites). Just set the BIOS to auto detect your hard drives.

How to fool a graphics card two monitors are connected?

    Q) I have built a PC solely for remote use via Logmein. The application being run needs 2 screens. I have put a twin screen card (GeForce 7300LE PCI-E) card in and it works fine both sitting in front of it and remotely. However I intended to remove the monitors as they are wasted (it will only ever be used remotely). It appears with these new fangled graphics cards they actually detect the monitors present and when no monitors are connected the graphics reset to single screen mode, with the second screen unavailable. This means if you connect remotely via Logmein it only runs as a single screen system. How can I fool the NVIDIA driver that both monitors are connected when in fact neither actually is ? I haven't found any way in the driver or included software to fool it to use two screens. Many thanks in advance Thanks to you both. I will try asking nvidia but from experience manufaturers are not too helpful. One display is VGA and the other is DVI . Thanks

    A) wow what a question. are the monitors connected using DVI or VGA cables. I think you are going to need a hardware answer to this bit like a loop back cable.an altered monitor cable of sorts this about all i can suggest http://majorgeeks.com/ try asking this question on the about support forum on the above web site,, as it's full of really smart techies good luck

    Who Monitors the Monitor's Monitors?

    Q) Think about it, is there anyone monitoring the monitor's if so who's monitoring them? Who's at the top of the chain of monitor's? Shouldn't there be no top of the monitors? Too much power up there... But if there is a top who should be there?

    A) Don't wanna sound like a preacher but, there is someome who monitors all. God..If there is a monitor who "Thinks" they're at the top. They need to think again. All their actions are being watched. And if their actions are unmoral etc.. their punshiment will be greater than anyof of could imagine.

    dual monitors are reversed?

    Q) ok .. i've run a laptop monitor as my primary monitor and a dell monitor as the second for awhile now. Woke up this morning and their identity is reversed. The checkbox in display properties to "use this device as the primary monitor" is greyed out for both monitors. How can i switch the laptop back to my primary monitor? http://www.myspace.com/seeingunseen

    A) Goto the display and click on 1 or 2 and say make this my primary monitor. It the last tab I think it should be advance tab. This should take it back and forth... If you are running Media XP...

    Assigning programs to monitors?

    Q) Is there any way to assign specific programs to either one of my two monitors, specifically, if i want two IE icons one on monitor one and one one monitor two, is there any way to make it that clicking on the icon on monitor one opens it only in monitor one and the icon on monitor two opens it just there, as opposed to my current situation where it opens on the monitor which i closed the program on last. TO MITCLAN! Can you email me and help me out... i have a radeon X800 desktop XP Media Center Edition, but i cant find software that will give me exactly what i want, just extended toolbars, which are nice but i need more.

    A) This will depend on the Software you Use. If you use a laptop, the problem will be a little bit harder. However, if you have a Desktop, its easier. You simply have to assign the details of the Hardware profiles what you need. I know for example that using Nvidia Software, I can get a Laptop screen's icons and start button to change from the open laptop to the secondary screen, as if the Secondary monitor is the main monitor. You will have to look at the software options available to you. I have seen some setups where 3 screens, with different icons and different options appear from the one PC. and it uses ONE video Card. So Since I know two is possible, then all you have to do is find the software under Nvidia's area that will give you this. The best Setup I have seen comes from a Dell D800 using Nvidia Geforce series card, and I can set it to do pretty much anything I want

    Computer Monitors Dieing?!?!?

    Q) I had a 17" Samsung LCD monitor attached to my computer, now it was about 2-3 years old and it just died one day, went all gray and wouldn't turn off. So i just thought maybe it was time for a new one, like who knows... them my dad gave me his old IBM big clunky monitor to replace until i got a new one and today i woke up and went to turn on my monitor and it didn't work, i hit the button the light comes on but nothing happens the screen stays dark, could there be something in my computer killing the monitors... could it be a virus? Whats wrong, I don't wanna hook up another monitor till i figure this out.... help me please?!!?!

    A) try the monitors with another computer, if it work then your graphic card may be gone or the software damaged, back up your files and perform destructive system recovery, if you want to make sure no corrupted files stays in your computer download kill-disk from killdisc.com, and then use the recovery disc

    Q) Ok this is my problem. I have 2 different Monitors (a 24' Dell and a 20" Samsung) the Dell is on my main video card a Nvidia GeForce 7900 and the Samsung is on a GeForce 6600. I "don't" what to have to drag the program to the monitor i want to use each time!! I also don't want to have to go to display properties and switch the 2 monitors around to with is primary and with is the extend monitor. If you could please help me on what program I knead to use that would be great. I am running Windows Xp pro.. Thank you!!!

Wide monitors, what do you think about them. What do you prefer wide or normal?

    Q) I just bought 2 weeks ago one Viewsonic 22 inch monitor wide but I am starting to get a little angry because all my pictures look stretched. I was using a laptop before, 15 inch and everything was perfect but when I bought the new computer and the new monitor I realised that all the images will be stretched unless I have it's optimal resolution. So my question is : What do you preffer wide monitors or normal monitors? What are the advantages or disadvantages of a wide monitor. Thanks in advance! ATC9

    A) I have a 19-inch widescreen. You have to use a specific non-standard resolution to avoid distorted ratios. Mine requires 1440x900 to look proper. I really enjoy it over the 19-inch CRT I was using and my eyes don't feel like they are constantly bombarded with rays. I ended up with the ViewSonic VA1912wb when CompUSA had it for $199 after rebate late last year.

Questions About Dual/Quad Screen Monitors and Graphics Cards?

    Q) I have been thinking about building a new computer lately, and one decision I will have to make is my monitor situation: 1. First, what do you prefer, 1, 2, 3, or 4 monitors? Why do you have the setup that you do? 2. How many graphics card(s) will I need? Should I get 1 good graphics card for a dual monitor setup or 2 lesser ones for 4 monitors? 3. Do you think it would be better to buy 4 17inch monitors or 2 22 inch monitors (all LCD). They both come out to roughly the same cost. 4. If I am playing a game and I have 2 graphics cards in SLI, is there a way I can "turn off" the other monitors I am not using and dedicate both cards to one or two monitors to get better performance?

    A) 2 monitors because a good graphic card only and can connect 1 monitor ,1 DVI monitor and 1 TV out and the DV connector you can buy a connector that you can plug to a standard 9 pin Monitor so 2 monitors and 1 tv out buy one ATI graphic card, and then install ATI tray tool. the tray tool will help you how to set up a dual monitor. the SLI Graphic Card are some output with the single graphic card as I said before. but SLI graphic card had a better performance than single card also had an expensive price more? mail me at zo3nomad@yahoo.com

    LCD monitors Vs. CRT monitors.?

    Q) Are LCD monitors better for your eyes Vs. CRT monitors? BTW, I do not have any problem(s) with CRT monitors as far as getting a headache due to refresh rate and so forth. I am considering investing in a 19" LCD screen and was wondering if it's 'really' worth the money. Thank you very much.

    A) yes LCDs r better then crts not as durable but much better no glare or burn ins and very coustomizable and small and thin too i have no problem with LCDs except the occational dead pixel but it should be covered under warrenty

    computer monitors other than LCD?

    Q) most monitors are LCD nowadays, but is there a term for the older "classic" monitors (that are not LCD)? Looks like all the monitors are LCD now. Do they even sell non-LCD monitors at stores? What I don't like about typical LCD displays is that the screen gets too dark or bright depending on how you look at it. Are there LCDs that doesn't do that?

    A) You better believe CRT monitors are still being sold. The display quality of LCDs still cannot compete with CRTs, though it's getting there. The computer graphics industry still uses CRTs pretty much exclusively, as do some serious computer gamers. However, since LCD are slowly getting to a point where they can complete with CRTs in terms of quality (as opposed to space or power usage, where LCDs win flat out), some companies, Sony for one, have already discontinued their CRT lines.

Is it possible to run dual monitors on a laptop that has a fairly good VGA card?

    Q) I have an intel 256 mb onboard VGA card. Im able to run a monitor to extend the desktop onto another monitor but i want to be able to close the lid to my laptop and have two monitors. I try to enable the second monitor but it doesnt show up as a monitor extended from my desktop? What do i do, I tryed advanced settings and that doesnt work. Im using a y splitter could this be the problem, can you not run duals on a laptop? Ive heard you need 2 seperate VGA cards to run dual monitors, or does anyone now of a good monitor hub kind of like a switch but it allows you to run more than one monitor, got the link for me?

    A) Yes, you can. You must disable the auto shut down when the laptop is closed. Check setting in control panel.
